Every family has that one place where dinner plans somehow end up.

For ours, it's Pizza Hut Betel.

It's almost become a running joke. Someone will suggest trying somewhere new, another person will ask, "What if the kids don't like it?" and within a few minutes we're heading towards Betel again.

It's not that Addis Ababa doesn't have good restaurants—we enjoy trying new places from time to time. But when three generations are eating together, finding a restaurant everyone agrees on is harder than it sounds. Pizza has become the one meal nobody argues about.

It Saves Us From the "Where Should We Eat?" Debate

If you've ever organised dinner for a family, you'll know that choosing the restaurant is often harder than choosing the food.

Someone wants pizza, someone else is craving pasta, one of the kids only eats pepperoni, and another insists on ordering chicken wings instead.

At Pizza Hut Betel, those conversations usually end pretty quickly because everyone already knows they'll find something they like.

Some of us order Chicken Supreme every single visit. My younger cousin never changes from Pepperoni Lovers. My uncle usually goes straight for Meat Lovers, while my aunt prefers something lighter like Margherita. Then there are the people who somehow manage to come to a pizza restaurant and still order pasta.

The nice thing is that nobody has to compromise.

Pizza Is One of the Few Meals Everyone Actually Shares

One thing I like about pizza nights is that they don't feel like ordinary restaurant meals.

Nobody waits politely for their own plate.

The pizzas go in the middle of the table, someone immediately grabs the first slice before everyone has sat down, and before long people are swapping slices because they're curious about another flavour.

By the end of the meal, it's impossible to remember which pizza belonged to whom.

That kind of sharing doesn't happen when everyone orders separate meals, and I think that's one reason pizza works so well for family gatherings.

The Deals Make More Sense Than Ordering Separately

When there are six or seven people at the table, ordering individually adds up surprisingly fast.

A couple of pizzas quickly turns into extra drinks, garlic bread, wings and desserts, and suddenly the bill is much bigger than expected.

That's why we usually look at the meal bundles first.

The BIG Dinner Box options are often enough to feed everyone comfortably without spending time calculating whether we should order another pizza or another side. It's simply easier, especially when everyone has a different appetite.

Rather than trying to build the perfect order ourselves, we normally let the bundle do the work.

It's Busy—Which Is Usually a Good Sign

One thing I've noticed about the Betel branch is that it rarely feels empty, particularly on Friday evenings and weekends.

You'll usually see birthday dinners, families with children, groups of students, and people picking up takeaway orders all at the same time.

Some people avoid busy restaurants, but I usually see it as a positive sign. Places that consistently serve good food tend to attract regular customers, and Pizza Hut Betel has built that kind of reputation over the years.

We Don't Always Eat There

Some weekends we don't even go inside.

If everyone has had a long week, we'll check the Pizza Hut Betel menu, order online and eat at home instead.

Movie nights, football matches and family gatherings are often easier that way.

The nice part is that we already know what everyone wants, so ordering rarely takes more than a few minutes.

There Are Plenty of Good Restaurants Around Betel

To be fair, Pizza Hut isn't the only place worth visiting in the area.

Betel has plenty of cafés, traditional restaurants and fast-food spots, and we still enjoy trying somewhere different now and then.

But those are usually places we visit in smaller groups.

When the whole family is involved, familiarity becomes an advantage. Everyone already knows the menu, the portions, and roughly how much we'll spend. That removes a lot of the uncertainty that comes with trying somewhere new.

Why We Keep Coming Back

I don't think it's because Pizza Hut makes the best pizza in every single situation.

It's because we know exactly what kind of evening we'll have.

The food is familiar, everyone finds something they enjoy, the atmosphere suits families, and dinner doesn't turn into a debate before we've even sat down.

Sometimes that's worth more than chasing the newest restaurant in town.

Final Thoughts

Addis Ababa has no shortage of places serving good pizza, and there are plenty of restaurants around Betel that deserve a visit.

But when our family wants an easy evening where nobody argues about the menu and everyone leaves happy, Pizza Hut Betel is usually where we end up.

After so many birthdays, weekend dinners and casual family meet-ups there, it has become less of a restaurant and more of a familiar meeting place. And I suspect a lot of other families around Betel have a place like that too.
