While using a train in the United States isn't quite as simple as it is in, say, Europe or Japan, New Yorkers have it rather easy since the city drift hunters is the hub of rail travel in the United States. When you combine the convenience of Amtrak, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, and the Long Island Railroad, traveling anywhere in the country or across the world is a breeze. When in doubt as to where you should go, consider these nine destinations best reached by rail.
The Lake Shore Limited, an Amtrak service, leaves New York City every day for Chicago. Passengers will travel through some stunning parts of upstate New York, around Lake Michigan, and into Chicago. Viewliner amenities, including the Viewliner Bedroom Suite with a foldout bed, are supposedly Amtrak's most desirable, and the greatest option for overnight travel. After arriving in Chicago, it's time to check out some of the city's top sights, such as the Art Institute, a neighborhood walking tour, The Bean, and the posh Pendry Chicago.
Take a trip to Westerly, Rhode Island, a sleepy seaside community perfect for a relaxing weekend, on the swift and convenient Amtrak Northeast Regional. The train is fast, but it travels through some beautiful scenery in Connecticut, including over bridges and through picturesque river vistas and farms. Get off the train at Westerly and go to The Ocean House, widely considered to be one of the most opulent hotels in the United States. There, kick off your shoes in one of its 49 guest rooms that provide ocean views, enjoy its spa services, and stroll directly to the beach. Even if you don't go far from the hotel, the surrounding area will seem like a quaint American town. Stop at the Savoy Bookshop and Cafe, The Cooked Goose, and Misquamicut Beach in the downtown area, or simply relax with your toes on the beach.
